Over the years, I have been quite vocal and honest about my ideas regarding soul mates, past lives and twin flames. It is far too easy to brush off our painful, gut-wrenching relationships to these concepts. A greater understanding of them is important in determining their validity.
Twin Flames
When I was first introduced to the idea of a twin flame, I laughed. To me, it sounded like a hybrid idea of a soul mate. I cannot tell you how many times I have spoken with someone who believed that the person they were hung up on was their soul mate. I have come to the realization that we are our own soul mate, and that the people that we attract to us are a reflection of this.
Do I believe in twin flames? No one has ever described a twin flame to me in a way that is sensible. When I Google the meaning of “twin flame,” it says, “Sometimes discussed in terms of a ‘mirror soul’ or ‘soul connection,’ a twin flame is the other half of your soul… So, although soul mate connections are highly significant, an encounter with a twin flame is on another level entirely. Usually, this will lead to romance.”
To this explanation, I propose the questions: How can there be another “half” of your soul? Wouldn’t this be soul fragmentation? Then this would follow that the “other” person is actually you. So, are you rediscovering yourself and the fragments of self from which you disconnected? If that is the case, then why would these relationships feel so damn dysfunctional? Wouldn’t they feel heavenly? My God, you are reconnecting with yourself!
Before you stop reading this, know that, in a spiritual sense, this makes sense if viewing it from the Kabbalistic perspective of the Qliphoth, also called “the shells” or “the twin of God.” The Qliphoth are the “shadow” or chaotic forces that are unleashed when our soul or energy is out of balance with the God Force. This opens the concept of duality, our consciousness that crystalizes through the vast emptiness. When our force or energy is out of balance, we exist, or believe to exist (because of consciousness and belief) out of balance with God. Twin flames, therefore, under this explanation, represent being in balance and unity with God.
Quantum Entanglement
Albert Einstein called the phenomena of quantum entanglement, “spooky action at a distance.” Action indicates energy. Since everything is energy, we can safely assume that our relationships are made up of the energy of the two or more people involved, and how each person’s energy affects the other. Quantum entanglement describes a situation where particles can remain connected so that the physical properties of one will affect the other, no matter the distance. This description of quantum entanglement implies that it can be felt between individuals across the globe. The quantum world is extremely weird. But knowing that it was describing the “connection” of souls and energy as it exists in the feeling of things helped me to better understand the twin flame idea.
The Experiment
The quantum entanglement experiment was conducted by Miles Padgett, who hold the Kelvin Chair of Natural Philosophy and is a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Padgett and his team first entangled photons, or light particles. When they hit a crystal with an ultraviolet laser, some of these photons from the laser broke apart into two photons. “Due to conservation of both energy and momentum, each resulting pair [of] photons are entangled,” Padgett noted. Padgett and his team found that the entangled pairs were correlated and in sync more frequently than was expected. Quantum entanglement, therefore, describes the phenomenon in which two particles (energy/thought) interacting with each other can remain connected, instantaneously sharing their physical states, no matter how far apart they are. (This also describes the feelings we have when we are in a twin flame relationship)
If, in fact, another person is your twin flame, I would contend that that person is a mirror of your soul. If all is one, then that person is a part of you. They are reflecting back to you that which needs to be healed and unified with the God Force that exists in you, works through you and is you. This relationship is about transcendence and self-realization. You are learning about your divine self through the mirror of another. They are you, and you are them. Twin flames, then, must be integrated and healed within oneself in order for the relationship to heal. But, make no mistake, this is a relationship with self and with God.
Are all twin flame relationships dysfunctional? No. Can they heal and do the two people come together in harmony? Yes. Can they work? Yes. But they require explicit self-examination, patience and unconditional love.
Soul Mates
Just like twin flames, you are your own soul mate. However, there are people you meet in this life that feel like home. Soul mates show up as children, friends, parents, brothers, sisters, family members, pets and lovers. We have many, many soul mates. A sense of compatibility and comfort exists with a soul mate. They bring a peace to your life. Although they may challenge you, you grow with them and through them.
Past lives, soul mates and twin flames are all relational to each other. Relationships are an elegant and fundamental property of the nature of things in relationship to self. Everything relates to everything else, and, since you are the observer, you relate to whatever it is that you put your focus on. A relationship is a teacher. Your relationships are showing you your true self. If used as a guide, your relationships will lead you to the divine nature within you.
