The work of psychics and mediums are often thought to be exactly the same, when in fact, they are not. All mediums are psychics, but not all psychics are mediums. Think of psychics as the main label and mediums as a type of psychic. Like many professions, psychics specialize in different modalities. Mediumship is just one.
My definition of mediumship is the ability to connect with spirits who have passed. Mediums are able to pick up on messages that are coming through from people who have crossed over to the other side and are no longer attached to a physical body in this world. Mediumship is a very specific type of ability that only some psychics have.
Just like psychic abilities, mediumship is different for each individual who possesses the gift. Some hear things, while others feel, or know, or see things. Sometimes they are able to see the spirit’s soul, and other details.
Many people who contact mediums are typically looking for closure or spiritual guidance by receiving messages from people they know who have passed on. Clients who are looking for the closure from a death is not something to toy with, but to take very seriously.
The spirit messages could be from recently departed loved ones, or they could be strangers who are just connected with a specific item or area. Some messages could also be from lingering souls who remain attached to this plane of existence.
My abilities of mediumship are not developed as a medium. I am able to detect my own loved ones who have passed. I am also able to tell if someone from the spirit realms is visiting me. Occasionally, I get the client who, after I already told them I am not a medium, still ask me to try and connect. But a medium by trade, I am not.
Some contemporary mediums dislike the term ‘psychic’ because they feel it carries a negative connotation, leading people to associations with crystal balls, tea-leaf reading, fortune-telling, or other stereotypes ~ Mark Ireland
I am a psychic. As years have progressed my abilities have shifted, strengthened and changed. I truly believe that every single human being has the untapped ability to be a psychic. It’s a matter of to your intuition, listening to your spirit guides, and listening to any feelings or messages you may be getting.
My first ever awareness that I had some form of ability began when I could read energy and see what was really going on in people’s lives. I pick this up by way of my subconscious and can literally hear messages I really need to hear. These visions and auditory messages are very specific. I just know something specific is going on, or going to occur. These future visions often play out at some point later on and confirm my knowing.
I began doing readings using Tarot cards, when I was a teenager. I was exploring my abilities to predict with divination tools. I then met people who were to teach me, but was also teaching myself. Our gifts are just that – our own special gifts.
I grew up in white suburbia and my parents raised me Catholic. They did not believe in psychic readings, abilities or anything of that nature. They did not encourage my abilities, my dreams or any of my curiosities when it came to other spiritual endeavors.
Being a reader is much like any other type of profession, the more you work at it, the more your skills become fine-tuned. I began to see continual visions, feel things I never expected and surprised even myself as some of the visions contradicted what I saw here on the physical plane. Then I began to trust what I didn’t see, more than what I actually saw!
Psychics tend to be clairvoyant, clairaudient, clairsentient, or claircognizant. We call these the ‘four clairs,’ referring to clear knowing, seeing, hearing, or feeling. Most psychics are stronger in one of the four, and then begin to develop the others as they move forward.
Like any discipline, you have to work at mediumship, and in the beginning it feels as though it’s going to be a very long slog, but if something’s worth doing then it’s worth the effort, and for me developing mediumship really was worth it ~ Gordon Smith
Most importantly, a psychic is someone who is in tune with their intuition, someone who can quiet their mind and listen to what is being sent to them as messages. How they decipher those messages to a client is entirely each individual psychic’s choice and need. It is very important to listen to yourself and have confidence in the messages, even if they don’t make sense to you.
One of the best ways to ensure you get a good psychic reading is to be sure that the reader can give you the kind of information you are looking for. Do you want to connect to a passed loved one? Do you want to know your future? Do you want to know which path to take? All of these types of questions really do affect the success of a reading. If you contact someone who is not a medium with the hope of connecting with your deceased grandfather, it will obviously not be a very good reading. Make sure you look at all their biographical information before choosing a psychic, and then make sure you have prepared all your questions you wish to ask.
