Creating and changing your own reality is possible if you know how to do it and if you work at it. One of the things that you must understand when you set out to change your own reality is how brain waves work. Brain waves contribute to our state of mind. Along with our subconscious mind, they play a key part in our quest for happiness, healing and changing our lives. By understanding your deeper states of consciousness, you can influence your subconscious mind and create your own reality with precision.
Understanding the Brain and Nervous System
The brain is an electrochemical organ. It is comprised of 100 billion brain cells, called neurons. Each of these neurons has the ability to connect to tens of thousands of other neurons. These connections create habits and patterns that are cued from our experiences, thoughts, feelings and actions. They add up to create your beliefs, habits and patterns, also known as your personality.
Remember, however, that you are not your personality. Your personality is simply a façade that you show to the world to keep up appearances. When you scratch the surface of your personality, you will find a beautiful being who is nothing at all like the face that you show to the world; one who is desperate to fit in and craving to be your true self.
The nervous system uses electricity in its communication between cells. Some researchers have postulated that, if your brain is fully functioning, it can generate up to 10 watts of electrical power. Electricity is the fundamental method by which neurons communicate with each other. You must understand the electrical properties of a neuron in order to understand the function of the nervous system.
Neuropsychologist Donald Hebb noted that “neurons that fire together, wire together.” Neurons are electrically excitable and communicate with other cells by way of connections called synapses. If your brain is firing the same connections over and over again, you will experience the same things over and over again. But, when you begin to meditate and move into different brain wave states, you can begin to fire new connections. When you are no longer firing the old connections, and instead, are strengthening new connections, you can begin to change your reality.
Five Types of Brain Waves
Brain wave entertainment is like tuning into a radio station. Each brain wave activity has its own unique state of consciousness. Every brain wave has its own frequency that you can tune into to change our lives. When you know how to turn the dial to the proper frequency, you can move mountains. You must have the desire to do so and be willing to practice.
There are five types of brain waves: alpha, beta, theta, delta and gamma. Each brain wave has its own distinct electrical pattern that operates at all times, even while you are sleeping. When you discover how to get into a specific state and vibrate to the same state as that brain wave, you can change your reality. This is what I teach in workshops and in meditation.
Alpha Brain Waves
The alpha brain wave is the state of deep relaxation. It is a slower wave. If you have been working on something then sit down to rest afterward, you are likely in the alpha state. During this state, you reflect and meditate. Alpha brain waves are present when you close your eyes and are daydreaming or lightly meditating. Your body is relaxed, and your mind is not focused on logic or reason. This is the perfect time for you to program your mind for success using your imagination in this awake, dreamlike state.
In the alpha brain wave state, your imagination visualizations, memory, learning and concentration are all heightened. It is the gateway to the subconscious mind. It is also the state in which your intuition activates and delivers messages, answers and insights. The more time you spend in the alpha state, the clearer your mind becomes and the more profound your experiences become.
Beta Brain Waves
Beta brain waves have a distinct purpose. They occur when your mind is actively and strongly engaged in a mental activity. Beta brain waves are present when you are in an active conversation, when you are highly focused, and are consciously awake. The beta state deals with logic and critical reasoning. If you are focused, driving in heavy traffic, you are in the beta state. However, when you are hyper focused for long periods of time in the beta state, you can become anxious and stressed. The beta state, which I also call the “adult state,” is the state in which your little critic resides.
Theta Brain Waves
Theta brain waves occur in a state of daydreaming or imagination. Anyone who has a long, easy drive to work will find themselves daydreaming, in a theta state. They will cover several miles and not remember doing any of it.
You will find that many of your great ideas occur when your brain is in the theta state. Runners are familiar with this state of mental relaxation. It also happens when you take a shower or a soak in the bathtub. During the theta state, your habits and tasks are so automatic that you don’t even think about performing them. The theta state is a very positive mental state.
When you were a small child, between two to six years of age, you were primarily in alpha and theta brain wave cycles. Now, as an adult, if you are under hypnosis or in meditation, you are also in the alpha and theta states. During these states, you are programmed by your environment, open to suggestion, in a hyper learning state, taking in the world around you. You formulate ideas about yourself and your beliefs about people and the world around you in the theta state. Buried deep within your subconscious mind are the beliefs, emotions, patterns and habits that you have formed and that you are still repeating from childhood. However, we can change these habits by using this state to recreate our reality.
Delta Brain Waves
The delta brain waves represent deep sleep. They are the lowest frequency of all brain waves, and are experienced when you are in a very deep dream sleep state. Delta brain waves can also be experienced during very deep transcendental meditation, in which your awareness is completely detached from anything mental, physical or emotional.
The unconscious mind lives in the delta wave realm. The collective unconscious and information that is received in this state is usually quite unavailable to your conscious mind. In the delta state, a deep regeneration that heals your mind, body, and spirit takes place. This is one reason why mental and physical rest is so important to your health.
Gamma Brain Waves
The fifth type of brain wave is the gamma brain wave. This wave is also known as the insight wave. The gamma brain wave vibrates at the fastest frequency. However, not much is known about the gamma state of mind. Gamma wave are associated with sudden bursts of insight and also with the ability to process high-level information.
Changing Your Brain Wave State
Being in any stressful state for too long can cause anger, insomnia, stress and anxiety. It affects your ability to learn and your performance, throwing you off of your purpose. Your diet and environment can also cause imbalances within your brain wave state, altering the physiology of your body.
Through meditation, you can learn to become skilled in dropping into a chosen brain wave state. This helps you shift your perception from stressed to relaxed, to choose rational thoughts over irrational thoughts, to improve tasks and to manage your life without negative reaction.
Not only during meditation, but also while praying, exercising, or being engrossed in something, you can change your brain wave state. Taking five minutes of time upon waking each morning and before retiring each evening to express your gratitude will bring you more things for which to be grateful. When you slow down, you send purposeful messages to your subconscious mind, creating healing and a life that is calm and centered.
In the morning, your brain is in the theta state. Positive thoughts and affirmations are very effective at this time and can make the difference between having a good day or a bad day. Keep a journal next to your bed and write down 3 things you are grateful for now and 3 things affirmatively as if you already have them. make the last three affirmations something that you absolutely know is achievable. This practice works! When you begin to see results and trust the magic of the process, you’ll use it every day.
In the evening, as you’re slowing down, your subconscious mind will communicate and pattern the last thing that you are thinking about right before you go to sleep. This is a great time to reflect and release thoughts and experiences of the day. If you had a bad day or something unpleasant occurred, replay those events in your mind, forgiving those who wronged you and blessing them. Fall asleep in that blessing. Upon waking, you will find that you have an insight that you didn’t have before. This is the beginning of change.
If you practice these measures with purpose, you will see a positive change in your outer world. Knowledge plus experimentation and experience creates wisdom.
